How to Divert Someone’s Calls to Your Phone Number

In our everyday life, we come across certain situations where we want our phone calls to be diverted to a different number. For example, if you are using a dual SIM phone which means you have two numbers. The one number is for corporate purposes or business calls and another one is for personal calls.

If due to connectivity or network issues, you lose the network in one of your numbers, then you won’t receive calls and messages on that particular number. Now, the only option you are left with is to politely request people to stop calling you on that number.

However, this seems to be an issue as you would be missing all your important calls on that number. Plus, that would be a lot of work and it will consume plenty of time unnecessarily. So, the best thing you can do here is starting receiving the calls on your second SIM.

That’s when call diverting or call forwarding comes into the picture. As the name suggests, it helps divert a call from one number to another.

Before moving into the ways to divert someone’s call to your number, for those who are not aware of this feature, let us first have a deep look at what call diverting or forwarding is.

Sound’s good? Let’s get started.

How Does Call Diverting Work?

When you divert calls to another number, there are basically two calls that take place. One is an incoming call which is the call from the person who is calling your number and the second one is an outgoing call which is the call made by the service provider to your forwarded number. There are many options present with the call forwarding feature. Let us look at a few of them.

  1. Forward all calls: This option will forward all your calls to a different number.
  2. Forward calls when busy: This option will forward the calls when the primary number is busy.
  3. Forward calls when not answered: This option will forward calls when calls on the primary number go unanswered.
  4. Forward calls when unreachable: This is when your primary network has a network issue and so the calls on your primary number would be redirected to the new number.

Now that we know the basics of call redirection, we can now move to how we can practically redirect someone’s calls to a different number (or maybe to your own number).

How to Divert Someone’s Calls to Your Phone Number

Call forwarding using phone settings: For this, you will have to get hold of the cell phone of the person whose calls you wish to divert. Once you get the phone, go to Settings, then Call Settings, then Call Forwarding. It will ask you to enter the number to which you want to forward your calls. Enter your own phone number and enable call forwarding. You will find the above-mentioned options. Choose ‘Forward all calls’ and you are done. All calls coming to that person will now be redirected to your number.

Call Management option in the service portal: Whichever service provider that person is having, there will be an online call management portal. In this portal, you can find the option of call diverting wherein you need to again set up the call diverting service by entering your own phone number. But again, in this way also you would need to have that person’s details (the phone number and the one-time password that would be sent to that person’s mobile for login verification).

By dialing up the number set by the network provider: There is another way by which you can dial up a certain combination of characters to set up call diverting. Although there is no global standard available for this particular combination of characters, major network providers use the following convention **21*<10 digits mobile number>#.

Here ‘21’ is called the divert code for situations where you wish to divert all calls to your number. There are other divert codes such as ‘61’, ‘67’ and ‘62’ also. ‘61’ is used for situations where you wish to divert only those calls which remain unanswered. ‘67’ stands for those where you wish to divert the calls only when the primary number is busy. ‘62’stands for those situations where you wish to divert calls when the primary number is facing network issues and is unreachable.

So for example, if you wish to divert all calls of someone to your own mobile number then you need to dial **21*9876543210# where 9876543210 stands for your own phone number. Replace this with your own phone number and your job is done. Here too, you would need the cell phone of that person for some time so that you could dial this number and set up call diverting.
